7.Train to Busan(2016)

If you haven’t seenTrain to Busanyet, what are you even doing?! This action-horror film out of South Korea is one of the best takes on a zombie outbreak.

Yeah, you may think zombie films are overdone by now, but this one manages to stay fresh with unique, well-written characters trapped in an interesting premise (as you can tell from the title, they’re on atrain).

Edgar Wright even said it’s the best zombie movie he’s ever seen!

6.The Witch in the Window(2018)

This movie provides an interesting twist on a tried and true horror movie formula—a family moves into an old house that’s haunted by a vengeful spirit who makes their lives miserable.

What makes this one different, though, is that evil spirit becomes stronger as the house is repaired. So the “improvements” Simon (the homeowner) makes could actually be he and his son’s downfall.

5.Therapy(2016)

Normally, I’m not a big fan of found footage films. I’m also not a big fan of foreign movies. However, there’s something aboutTherapythat I really enjoyed.

The movie centers around the two police officers, Jane and Simon, as they uncover what happened to a group of tourists.

They uncover footage that seems tame enough, but as the film progresses, things escalate, and it ends up being a pretty dark movie.

4.Satan’s Slaves(2017)

This is actually an Indonesian film written and directed by Joko Anwar. It’s one of those movies that no one talks about enough, because it’s really quite fantastic.

It tells the story of a mother who passes away to a strange illness. Once she’s gone, her family’s problems are just beginning, as evil entities start to terrorize and possess the family.

If you like demon horror, this is the film for you.

3.Lake Bodom(2017)

I love slashers and I’m not afraid to admit it. But the one thing I love more than a straight-up slasher flick is one that manages to subvert your expectations and do something different.

That’s exactly whatLake Bodommanages to execute to perfection. You think you have the film, which centers around a group of teens camping out Finland’s Lake Bodom, all figured out, and then it goes somewhere completely different.

To put it simply, this is a must-watch for all horror fans.

2.Prevenge(2016)

Here we have another straight-ahead slasher film. Well, actually it’s a pretty standard dark British comedy. Okay, soPrevengeactually is not cut and dry at all.

This movie is as messed up and violent as it is hilarious. Our killer is actually being controlled by her unborn child, which is a premise that’s both creative and twisted.

1.Mayhem(2017)

This film stars Steven Yeun, who you may recognize as Glenn from AMC’sThe Walking Dead(Shudder is owned by AMC as well). He plays a character named Derek Cho who is wrongly fired from his job.

All of his former colleagues have come down with a virus that makes them act on wildest impulses, and he, along with a former client (played by Samara Weaving), must fight their way to the executives to exact revenge.

Mayhemis absolutely insane, and it never lets up on violent entertainment.
