13. The Great Gatsby (2013) Literature scholars may disagree on whetherThe Great Gatsbyis F. Scott Fitzgerald’s best work, but no one can deny it’s his most well-known. Baz Luhrmann directed the fourth movie adaptation of the 1925 novel (sadly, the first of them is lost forever) and infused the historical with the contemporary, similar to what he did withRomeo + Julietin 1996. Leonardo DiCaprio stars inThe Great Gatsby(as he also did inRomeo + Juliet), and of course he plays the titular billionaire Jay Gatsby, who’s like a Jazz Age Jordan Belfort with more heart and less swearing....

13. The Shallows (2016) Directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, this one-woman horror film stars Blake Lively as a surfer caught out in open waters. The tense survival flick follows Nancy Adams, who’s stranded 180 meters from land and encircled by a Great White Shark. Not ideal! Set on the beaches of Mexico,The Shallowsis an immersive B-movie that hooks and reels us in without barely leaving the shoreline. The Shallowsalso manages to dodge the usual shark attack tropes found in the likes of, say, theSharknadofilm series....

1.Freaks and Geeks This coming-of-age TV comedy created by Paul Feig and Judd Apatow was a big hit with anyone who self-identifies as either a freak or a geek. (Hey, that’s the name of the show!) It nearly always shows up in online lists of the best TV shows that were canceled too soon, and sometimes even shows up in roundups of the best TV shows of all time. Freaks and Geekswas indeed canceled too early, in large part due to how hard NBC made it to watch the show....

13.Among Us Among Ushas taken over all kinds of online communities, and for good reason: it’s simple, it’s thrilling, and it’s addictive. You run around completing tasks on your spaceship, while trying to identify which crewmate is the impostor (and ejecting them before they kill everyone). You can play for free on Android and iPhone, but the experience is cleaner on Nintendo Switch. It only costs a few dollars and you get all the skins (which are DLCs for mobile)....

13. A Farewell to Arms (1932) Ah, sentimental melodrama at its finest. Although it lacks the sharp edges of Ernest Hemingway’s original 1929 war novel—the coarse brutality of WWI inspired by Hemmingway’s own experience in the Italian campaign—A Farewell to Armsis a beautiful, almost dreamy movie within itself. Frank Borzage directs Helen Hayes and Gary Cooper as war-torn lovers who meet a much happier end in the Hays Code alternate ending....
